Band Instrument Care

Here are some great ideas for how to take care of your band instrument. Students who use school instruments must follow these guidelines.

ALL INSTRUMENTS

  • Make sure the case is clean and secure.
  • Label the case with the student's name.

WOODWINDS

  • After playing, swab the instrument to remove moisture.
  • Wipe the outside of the instrument with a soft cloth.

REEDS

  • Always remove the reed after playing.
  • Dry it off and place in a reed case.
  • Always have four good reeds ready to use.

BRASS

  • After playing, drain excess water from instrument.
  • Oil valves and/or slides regularly.
  • Wipe the outside of the instrument with a soft cloth.
  • Give the instrument a bath and clean it with a snake about once a month so it doesn't corrode.

PERCUSSION

  • Store sticks in a stick bag.
  • Label stick bag and sticks with student's name.
